Scientific Content Analysis (SCAN)
The nuances of language is something that often goes unnoticed during conversation. SCAN was a technique developed to provide a scientific approach to determine where deception may be present.
’Everyone wants to tell you everything’, even the people who commit crimes says the architect of SCAN Mr Sappir. A fraud risk practitioner requires tools to read information clearly. SCAN is the tool that gets to the truth of the matter.
SCAN will show:
- Whether the subject is truthful or deceptive
- What information the subject is concealing
- Whether or not the subject was involved in the crime
SCAN gives you the edge.
There are many options to use SCAN. Insight Risk Group uses the technique in the review of statements, letters, affidavits or transcripts. It involves evaluation of words used by the writer.
How does it work? Each of us has our own internal spell checker that subconsciously dictates the use of appropriate words within a given set of circumstances.
The layman relies on eyeballing someone during an interview looking for things such as demeanour, body language or physiological changes. In effect, they are relying and trusting their instinct.
We can assess what a person is or is not saying by evaluating the written word. SCAN provides a methodology that goes beyond guessing, gut instinct or intuition.
SCAN is applicable in any language. It has been developed and refined over a long period. It is a methodology to uncover where deception may be present by examining the language used by the subject and looking at the structure and content of a document.
